Age verification/assurance marches on
The number EU Member States that have signed this letter varies from a minimum of 11 to a maximum of 19 depending on which news outlet you read. Whatever the number we are reminded it is not just in the UK, Australia and a couple of other "odd places" that the idea of age verification/assurance is settled policy and is no longer a fringe issue. Av/a is front and centre of every discussion about children and the internet, if not the internet more widely. The only question now is how, where and by whom it should be done. This moment has been a long-time coming but it is here and not going away. There will be rearguard actions to hang on to as much as possible of the status quo, but that's all they will be: rearguard, defensive actions. Lots of people find change difficult, particularly those who became wedded to some of the romantic ideals and ideas associated with the early days of the internet, ideals and ideas that have been substantially crushed by the commodification of cyberspace.
